ELA Power Point Tutorial by Mark Rittgers and Ariana Alvarez



                                                           ELA POWER POINT TUTORIALS


 This week the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders have a Power Point Tutorial in the Primary Playroom, for the entire day. Students will watch videos, play ELA games, work in groups, write essays based around ELA. Students will have fun exploring ELA skills, that will prepare them for the ELA State Assessment.

Anthony Barrett interviewed Mr Armand

I,  Antony Barrett  interviewed our (K-2) Assistant Principal Mr. Armand and these are the questions I had for him.


Q: "What do you do in your free time?"
A:"I spend time with my family/children and grand kids."


Q:"How can you improve the school?"
A: "I can help support K-2nd grades."


Q: "What are your thoughts on vending machines in our school?"
A: " I would go for vending machines as long as they provide healthy snacks."

Q:"Do you think our middle schoolers should get recess?"
A:  "Everyone should have some time for recess."

Mrs. Winfield Computer Science Class By Michael G

       Hi, my name is Michael G, I am one of the GEM Reporters. Today I will be talking to Mrs. Winfield Corbett's about her Computer Science Empire Class. I asked her some questions about her class and the following are her responses. 

The first question I asked was "What is your after school program about?"
 Her response:  "I work with Computer Science for innovators and makers."  My students work on computer coding and block coding and also java script. 

The second question is "Will you do a project in the future". 
Her response:  " Yes, my students are learning how to program micro bits with computer coding. They also use micro chips to do projects". 

The last question I asked was "What do you teach?" 
Her response: "Computer Science for Innovators and Makers".

Mr Prokosch Interview: Michael Diaz

We had the chance to interview our (6-8) Assistant Principal, Mr. Prokosch, Here's what we asked him:

Q: "What do you in your free time?"
A:" I like to hang out with family and play golf."

Q: "What do you do to help the school?"
A: "I like to listen to kids, parents, faculty and listen to suggestions"

Q: "What do you think can improve the school?"
A: "I want all of us working together, listen to needs and help our school family."

Q: "Whats your thought about vending machines?"
A: "I would allow it for breakfast."

Q: "Do you think 6-8 graders should get recess?
A: "If there was a good schedule, then we would get recess but K-5 grades already have recess built into their schedule."

Interviewing Mrs. Russell.



Hi I am part of the Meadow Hill GEMS Blog and I interviewed Mrs. Russell, one of our Assistant Principals.  Here are three questions I asked her.

Q:  "What do you like about this school?"
A:  "I like to work with people at this school."

Q:  "What do you want people to work on?"
A: "I would like people to work on kindness.  Treat others with respect and compassion because you never know what others have been through."

Q:  "What are some important things we need to do in school?"
A:  "The important things we need to do at school are to be safe, be respected and feel that students belong here."

NY State ELA Assessment By Michael G


  I am one of the GEM Reporters and today I will be talking about the ELA State Assessment. The assessment will be in April. I am giving you some tips to do well on the test. First, you should get at least 8 hours of sleep to have a good morning. Second, you should eat a good breakfast for your mind to think. Third, you should study your notes and standards and boom you will do well on the ELA State Assessment. I am a GEM Reporter, signing out.

The greatest musicians from the NECSD from Grades 5-6 are getting together to perform in a great concert at NFA Main! They will be participating in band, chorus, and orchestra. The students have worked very hard for this performance. We wish them well!

We had an opportunity to interview Mr. Anthony Grice who is our Empire State Program Facilitator.  


Q#1 - How did you get this program?
A#1 - It was a grant for 5 years for this program. This is our first year.

Q#2 - Did you choose the subjects?
A#2 - " I spoke with all directors, principals, parents, teachers, and students. I also did some research on my own."

Q#3 - How long have you been doing this?
A#3 - " I've been working in the district for 15 years. This is my first year in this program."

Q#4 - What have you done before this program?
A#4 - " I did another grant call "Community Schools". It was only in three schools."

Q#5 - Does you want the Meadow Hills GEMS blog back again next year?
A#5 -  "Yes."

Q#6 - Do you have kids in the district?
A#6 - " I have three kids in the district. (Fostertown School and NFA North)

Q#7 - Did you go through the Newburgh Schools?
A#7 "Yes." ( Horizons, Fostertown, Meadow Hill, North Jr. Nigh, NFA Main, and then went on to a
SUNY College)

Q#8 - Is this your dream job?
A#8 - "Not always as a kid but now yes!"

We are the GEMS Reporters and today we interviewed Ms. Campbell the 6th grade Science teacher. We asked her some questions about her project she is working on with her students. 

Q:  "What is your project about?" 
A: "It is about earth structure, it includes volcanoes, earthquakes, and how earth changes over time, also students use thinking maps."  

Q: "Will it be something that the students do?" 
A: " Students create thinking maps about earth structure." 

Q: "What is your greatest theory of science?" 
A: " Newtons Three Laws of Motion."

MHS GEMS Informer by Aleksandra Belugin

The Meadow Hill Gems Informer


The Meadow Hill GEMS Informer is an online newspaper under the guidelines of the Empire program. One of the events we will be covering is the upcoming Faculty/Staff Egg Hunt which will be taking place on the 23rd of March! We will soon have a segment about it on the blog.  

We will also feature a spotlight for artists as an addition to the Blog. In this spotlight we will have a submission from one of Meadow Hill's own young artists from different grade levels on display every week!

This week's submission is by me, Aleksandra Belugin.  Who will be next?  



8th grade Italian fashion show

Ms. Monica's 8th grade class had a Italian Fashion Show. Each student had to individually select an outfit to wear in the classroom fashion show.  There were three steps that the students needed to follow.

Step 1- The students had to brainstorm and come up with ideas about what kind of clothing and accessories to use in front of the class.

Step 2- The students had to research vocabulary words such as color, texture, design, etc. Then they had to describe their outfit to the other students in front of the class.


Step 3-The students needed to have fun!  


Guess what!  The students did have a lot of fun!





















                                              

GEMS CULTURAL FAIR RESCHEDULED!! By Michael G





Break The Cycle assembly: by Mark Rittgers, Aleksandra Belugin and Carina Mangano

 On March 7th the 7th and 8th graders had an assembly led by Break the Cycle which is an anti-bullying and anti-violence program that travels the world spreading non-violence. This took place in the gym with 3 guest speakers from Break the Cycle who told stories of  non-violence, forgiveness and being a better person. The guest speakers were  Kathrine last name not found(whose older brother died of a drug overdose.) Ann Marie  D'Aliso (  whose son died committed suicide from depression) and Hashim Garret(who joined a gang and was shot six times in the back and legs by another kid with a sub machine gun and was paralyzed from the waist down.) They told stories of how to forgive people and to practice non-violence. At the end of the assembly each student received a copy of the book 'WHY FORGIVE?' by Johann Christopher Arnold. 

PLTW Mural with Mrs Williams by Mark R and Amiracle D

Mrs. Williams, one of our art teachers has been working on a mural with the Project Lead the Way students for our school.  This mural is inspired by the artist Keith Haring.  Each student drew a sketch and Mrs. Williams drew it on the wall.  After she traced it on the wall, the students traced it with Sharpies, and currently they are painting it.  They combined this artist's work with the district motto "Do It With Love"  They will trace this motto with black after they're done.
We asked Mrs. Williams some questions.

Q:  How long will it take to create this mural?
A:  We will be working on it every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday after school

Q:  When do you expect it to be completed?
A:  Sometime in May.

Q:  How many students are in this project?
A:  I have twelve students.

Interviewed Ms.N class By Denim Williams , Ashton Brunet and Patrick Hayes

Mrs. Neugebauer's class has been working on Figurative Language.  We interviewed three students from her first grade class. We asked these students a few questions about a book they have been reading.  It is a book on Figurative Language.



Q:  What do you enjoy about books?
A:  We enjoy reading them.

Q:  What is the name of your book?
A:  The book is called "Cat Got Your Tongue?"

Q:  What did you like about this book
A:   It is a funny book.

Q:  What is this book about?
A:  This book is about Figurative Language.


Mrs.Cross and her Project By Michael G, and Sumayah M

Today we interviewed Ms.Cross a first grade teacher at Meadow Hill School about her project.  She explained about her 'A Box of Sunshine'.  She told us it was for the victims of the school shooting in Florida. She made some postcards that were yellow to symbolize sunshine. She asked students to make some posters that showed Peace, Hope, and Love. Classes also created an eagle because that was the school symbol of  the school. Also other classes at Meadow Hill  helped make all the posters and donated candy. It was a great project and we want to thank Mrs. Cross. I hope this helps the victims in Florida.
